Goods Held Hostage
This is the most alarming scam. Movers load your belongings into their truck, then refuse to unload at the destination unless you pay a drastically higher amount — often in cash, with threats of keeping your goods.
Fake Online Listings
Scammers create fake websites and Google Business listings with stolen photos, fabricated reviews, and copied GST numbers from legitimate companies. They disappear after collecting an advance payment.
Unnecessary Insurance Push

- ✕Price seems too good to be true: A quote 40–60% below every other company is a trap, not a deal. Genuine movers have real costs they must cover.
- ✕No written quotation or contract: They only give a verbal or WhatsApp quote and resist providing a signed agreement, bill of lading, or invoice.
- ✕No GST registration number: Every legitimate business in India providing services above ₹20 lakh must be GST registered. Ask for it and verify on the GST portal.
- ✕High advance demanded upfront: Asking for 50% or more before the move begins is a classic advance fraud setup.
- ✕Reviews look fake or too perfect: All 5-star reviews, posted within a short period, with generic language — these are purchased reviews.
- ✕No home visit before quoting: Legitimate movers inspect your goods in person before giving a final price. A quote without seeing your home is likely inaccurate — and can be inflated later.
- ✕Pressure tactics: "This price is only for today." "We have 3 other bookings and can't hold this slot." Urgency pressure is a manipulation tactic.
- ✕No insurance offered or explained clearly: A professional moving company always clearly explains transit insurance options. Vague answers mean it likely doesn't exist.
- ✕Unlabelled or poorly maintained trucks: Legitimate companies have branded vehicles. An unmarked, battered truck is a red flag on moving day itself.

How to Verify a Moving Company Before Booking
Don't just Google the name and trust the first result. Here's a step-by-step verification process that takes less than 15 minutes but can save you thousands of rupees.
Check GST Registration Online
Visit gst.gov.in and enter the company's GSTIN. Any legitimate business will show up. If the number is fake or returns no results — walk away immediately.
Visit or Call Their Registered Office
Call the landline number (not just mobile). Better yet, visit the physical address before booking. A company with a real office has real accountability.
Request a Written Quotation
Ask for a detailed written quote on company letterhead. It must include: base charges, packing material costs, loading/unloading charges, transit insurance, and any applicable taxes. No written quote = no deal.
Verify Reviews Across Multiple Platforms
Check Google Reviews, JustDial, Sulekha, and even Facebook. Look for consistent, detailed reviews over a long period. Ask for references from past customers if you can.
Read the Contract Carefully Before Signing
Ensure the contract clearly states the final price, pickup and delivery dates, insurance coverage, and a clause about what happens if goods are damaged or delayed. Never sign a blank or partially filled contract.

If you've already paid an advance to a fraudulent company or your goods are being held hostage, don't panic. Act fast with these steps:
- ✓File a police complaint (FIR): Go to your nearest police station and report the fraud. Mention the company name, address, phone number, and all payment details. Cybercrime cases can also be filed at cybercrime.gov.in for online fraud.
- ✓Contact your bank immediately: If you paid via UPI, net banking, or credit card, call your bank's fraud helpline. In many cases, digital payments can be reversed within 24–48 hours if reported promptly.
- ✓File a consumer complaint: Register a complaint on the National Consumer Helpline: 1800-11-4000 (toll-free) or visit consumerhelpline.gov.in. You can also approach your local Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum.
- ✓Gather all evidence: Save all WhatsApp messages, call recordings (if any), receipts, bank statements, screenshots of the website, and any contract you received. This will be critical for legal proceedings.
